About Ian
Ian Heptinstall’s career has spanned three main fields: projects, contracts and supply chain.
His early career was spent managing major capital projects in the chemicals industry. In the late 1990’s he led one of the first onshore projects to adopt the collaborative contracting approach.
He also held a range of senior procurement roles, including that of CPO at a major UK construction firm where he led a team of over 70 people, being accountable for £350M/year of external spend.
As an expert Ian has supported clients in supply chain improvement, contracting and multi project management.
Today Ian works for the University of Birmingham as course lead for the Masters in Industrial Project Management. His academic position allows him to also work in his private capacity. This is how he can also support Mobilé and their clients, particularly on owner-focused multi project management and project procurement. He is author of The Executive Guide to Breakthrough Project Management, and is co-chair of the APM’s Special Interest Group on contracts and procurement.
Ian lives with his wife in the UK, close – but not too close – to their three children and five grandchildren.
